On Tuesday, the Honourable Konris Maynard, Minister of Energy, accompanied a delegation from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) to Nevis for a courtesy visit with the Honourable Premier Mark Brantley and to evaluate the geothermal site at Hamilton.
The visit marks a significant step in the ongoing diplomatic relations between St. Kitts and Nevis and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, established on September 29, 2016. The SFD delegation arrived to assess the geothermal project on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
The SFD delegation was led by General Director of Credit Operations, Mr. Ayman Mohammed Tulaihi, and included Eng. Ali Mohammed Alsanan, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Alshabibi, Mr. Abdullah Khaled Alsugair, and Eng. Khayal Fahad Abalkhail.
Minister Maynard and Premier Brantley provided brief statements to the press before engaging in discussions at the Premier’s Office. Minister Maynard emphasized the importance of the SFD’s evaluation, noting its significance in fostering partnerships. He highlighted previous meetings with Saudi Arabia, including those at the CARICOM Summit and COP 28.
Premier Brantley welcomed the delegation and reflected on the establishment of diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia during his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He described the visit as a natural progression of this relationship.
Following the discussions, the group visited the geothermal site at Hamilton. Albert Gordon, General Manager of the Nevis Electricity Company (NEVLEC), and Naftalie Errar, Project Coordinator for NEVLEC’s Project Management Unit, were present for the assessment.
Mr. Errar reported favorable test results on the Hamilton wells and outlined plans to construct three production wells and a power plant to meet the energy demands of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The visit by the SFD delegation represents a pivotal moment in the development of geothermal energy in Nevis, potentially leading to greater energy independence and sustainability for the region.
