The work of the Energy Unit is guided by the National Energy Policy, which is built on four pillars: energy security, universal access to energy, affordable energy, and protection of the environment. The National Energy Policy also sets a target of 100 percent of electricity being produced from renewable sources.
The work also have to function within the confines of existing energy-related legislation, which includes:
The Electricity Supply Act, which is the legal framework for the electricity sector,
The amendment to the electricity supply act which makes provision for the promotion of Renewable Energy Sources, and
The Nevis Geothermal Resources Development Ordinance, which is the legal framework for the discovery, development, and production of geothermal resources in Nevis.
