The Ministry, through the Energy Unit, is engaged in several projects in pursuit of the following goals:
- Make progress towards the Federation’s renewable energy goals.
- Show the Federation’s commitment to renewable energy through visible local projects
- Support local solar businesses, jobs, and workforce development
- Reduce the Federation’s impact on the climate by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions

Geothermal
Nevis has geothermal resources that are far in excess of the electricity demand of both St. Kitts and Nevis, combined. The Government intends to develop these geothermal resources.
Solar Powered Desalination Plant
The United Arab Emirates (UAE)will provide grant funding for a solar-powered desalination plant, which will be located at Canada.
North Star Wind Farm
The Energy Unit and SKELEC, assisted by the Legal Department, are negotiating a power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 6.6 MW wind farm to be located at Belle Vue.
SKELEC's Integrated Resource and Resilience Plan (IRRP)
The Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) is assisting SKELEC and the Energy Unit in developing an Integrated Resource and Resilience Plan (IRRP).
Renewable Energy Tariff
The Energy Unit is developing the requisite regulations and tariffs to ensure that persons connecting renewable energy plants to the grid are adequately compensated for the energy that these plants feed into the grid.
Procurement Of Electric School Buses
The Energy Unit is collaborating with the Department of the Environment and through the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) for the procurement of an electric school bus and charging stations.
LED Street And Playfield Lighting Retrofit
All streetlights on St. Kitts and Nevis have been replaced by more efficient LED lighting. Replacement of the lighting fixtures on playfields with LED lamps is underway on both islands.
Pogson Medical Center Rooftop Solar
An application was made to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for US$50,000.00 of grant funding for a rooftop solar PV plant at the Pogson Medical Center.
Republic Of China On Taiwan Renewable Energy Consultancy
The objective of this project is for the Republic of China on Taiwan to assist the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in the promotion and development of renewable energy and enhancement of related professional expertise of its citizens in the field.
